Retro-comedy-horror-loli-shounen series Dororon Enma-Kun Meeramera returns to fill your nostalgia hole with all the puns, comical over reactions and cheeky self-awareness it can hold.
Tentacles are go at the amusement park for clumsy loli Harumi and her school chums. Who will save them? Why is Yukiko-hime naked?
I don’t know.
It’s backstory time! Finally we learn why the Demon Patrol is on the scene. Because the Demon King said so.
It’s no time for questions with a mole in the ranks and two powerful demons on the loose. Who will stop them? Why is Yukiko-hime naked?
I don’t know
Thoughts:
Dororon Enma-kun Meeramera exists in a grey area. It hasn’t quite found the balance between straight up kid’s show and ironic throwback. Instead it puts forward a bizarre mix of incredibly childish, sometimes painfully unfunny humor and self-deprecating parody. Is the voice acting sometimes bad to mock the “good old days” or is it just bad? Replace “voice acting” with jokes, gags, plot or episode structure and the question is just as valid. Having a character comment on how stupid, unnecessary or nonsensical something is doesn’t make it any less stupid, unnecessary or nonsensical.
Maybe this was just a bad episode. I’m not prepared to write off this series just yet. The music is fantastic. The aesthetics are all there and it still has some good will built up from the first episode.
If it doesn’t make a decision about itself or more cleverly avoid making that decision though, I’m out.
