You might think the story of A Channel, adapted from a four panel comic strip and featuring the daily lives of four high school girls, is a familiar one. You’d be right.

Tooru goes crazy at Yuuko.

The Tooruminator.

Besides some brief character introductions, the episode focuses mainly on the Tooru x Run relationship to set up the foundation of the series. First, some assault with a deadly weapon. Next, we’re treated to the first flashback where Tooru excitedly learns she’s been accepted into the same high school as her best friend Run. On her way to share the news, we’re treated to the first altercation between jealous “Why do you make me hit you?” Tooru and dark-haired, body-mature Yuuko.

Run has hair like a canary.

Run makes Yui look like a neural surgeon.

Back in current A Channel time we have a standard lunch, with all the lunch discussion and then finish up the school day getting an education in dumb as Run almost falls from a second story window and then tries to cut a piece of hard candy with a box cutter. But what she lacks in brains she makes up for in heart…

Yuuko Run Nagi play nice with Tooru.

Slap me a fresh one!

Tooru shows her sensitive side towards the end, expressing some fear of losing her friend to much cooler older girls. They all hug and then move on. The episode ends with Tooru once again assaulting Yuuko and then a somewhat strange montage.

Thoughts & Observations:

If you’re a fan of both slice of life comedies and high school girls, you may like this. It’s not completely horrid, just mostly blah. It seemed to be lackluster in just about everything. The production value, while seemingly high with music and voice acting, is wanting in terms of character design. The backgrounds and color palette were even eye-catching at times. There are gags, but it doesn’t do gags as well or as speedily as some similar shows  in the past or even Nichijou airing this season.

I am a fan of both slice of life comedies and high school girls and I’ll keep watching with hopes of the show improving or a possible introduction of a plot.
